be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age or older. Click

The Computer Looking Glass was designed to nurture
children’s curiosity and encourage a sense of wonder and joy in discovering the world
of computers around them. Children are innately curious. Even in infancy they begin a
process of exploration and query that allows them to make sense of the world. As children
learn to observe, to discover the sequential nature of events, to understand how things
work and to predict outcomes, they develop the fundamental skills of computer literacy.
Each game is carefully chosen to provide educational activities that help children
practice sorting, sequencing, observing, predicting and constructing. A child’s
experience in each game help them practice both their creative thinking skills and their
logical reasoning skills. Encouraging exploration and creativity and rewarding persistence
are key components of each of our interactive computer software programs. The librarians,
along with the Children’s Department staff, encourage parents to facilitate their
child’s exploration into the world of computers.
Internet Access in
the Children’s Department
 Children,
with parental supervision, are invited to surf through cyberspace and gather a wealth of
information from homework and school to TV and movies. Contacting a relative or friend via
E-mail is only a few keystrokes away. Best of all, children will use the Internet as an
interactive tool in discovering limitless paths of learning and adventure.
Parents/caregivers may sign permission for their children to independently research school
assignments on the Internet at the Information Desk. The library takes
great care to block undesirable sites, including chat rooms and instant
messaging. |
